More on the band:
Drums – Jonno Sweetman is one of the most original and sensitive drummers on South Africa’s exploding music scene. His sound and approach attract attention wherever he plays and in whatever context he finds himself. Drumming is in his blood. His father, the late Robert Sweetman, was a great drummer who played professionally in the ’60s and ’70s.
Nic Williams is a Pianist and composer from Cape Town, South Africa. He was mainly self-taught up until the age of 19 when he decided it was time for him to take the piano lessons. It was at this time he started attending jam sessions in search of a chance to play and met multi-instrumentalist Mark Fransman who became the biggest influence in his musical life.
He was mentored by Fransman for over a year before going to the University of Cape Town to study jazz piano from 2007-2011. In addition to Fransman’s mentorship, he had the opportunity to study with Dr.Andrew Lilley and Andre Peterson. In 2013 Nicholas was awarded a scholarship in the SAMRO Piano Competition which allowed him to study with swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch (Ronin) in Zurich. Nicholas has worked with Buddy Wells (Buddy Wells Quintet), Rus Nerwich (The Wondering Who), Mark Fransman, Kesivan Naidoo (Kesivan and the Lights), Salim Washington, Alvin Dyers, and Errol Dyers. Mandla Mlangeni (TRC), Darren English, Francesca Biancoli, Emily Bruce, and many more.
He has performed at most major jazz festivals in South Africa as well as festivals and jazz venues in Italy, Belgium, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. He currently leads the Nick Williams Project as a pianist and composer.
Ryan McArthur is a bassist, songwriter and session musician with over 15 years of experience performing extensively both locally and abroad (UK, Europe, Australia, Tanzania) as well as a large portfolio of studio work spanning Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul, Folk, and Reggae. He graduated with honors in jazz performance from UCT and was selected for the 2014 Standard Bank National Youth Jazz band.
